Random thoughts about the WW Animated movie
So I finally got to see the Wonder Woman animated movie. I went to Wal-Mart twice to get it, and the first time nobody had any clue where it was, the second time the clerk brought me over to the bottom-right corner of a display booth, about an inch from the floor, and there was half a dozen copies hiding behind "Smallville" season 2-6.

But now I have seen it, and I saw a bit of the audio commentary, which had a few incredibly interesting facts. Did you know the reason why they had Diana throw the tiara so much is because Lauren Montgomery was a fan of it from Sailor Moon? But the reason Takeuchi included the tiara throw in Sailor Moon was because she was such a fan of it from Wonder Woman! Circles upon circles, people!

The animation and art style was frigging beautiful. Diana actually looked Greek, which is awesome, and her fight scenes were really great.

The Diana in that movie was ... slightly interesting. Artemis was really neat, though, and I'm saying this as a human being who also hates the whole "Strong women must want to castrate men!" thing. She really stole every scene from Diana, because I didn't really see as much into Diana as I did Artemis. Whereas Diana would have ten seconds of emotional insight, every scene with Artemis was one where I saw into her. The scene where she discovers Alexa's death? The one where she fights with Alexa? The one where she's looking over her things? All were awesome. It really came off more as a good movie that starred Wonder Woman then a good Wonder Woman movie.

When Diana and Steve fought, I thought she was clearly holding back, because remember later on in the hospital scene where she slaps him? Well, she didn't kill him there, so I kinda thought she always holds back around him.

I also loved Michael Jelenic's original hospital scene, it sounded so dramatically over the top and ridiculous and stupid, of course, but it would have been hilarious. LM edited it to make it a bit more logical, and described it as

Diana: You didn't stop Ares.
Trevor: Yeah, well YOU HATE MEN!

Jelenic seemed like he wasn't too fond of the Wonder Woman fans. He said that us fens specifically are very particular. "They want her to be strong, and they want her to be feminine, and she has to be compassionate, and she has to be even-tempered", he said. Well ... yeah. We also want Superman to be strong, and kind-hearted, and caring, and inspirational, what's so bad about expecting SUPER things from a SUPER hero?

It was still a pretty good movie, and worth the 17 bucks Canadian (roughly 20 cents American), but I really  hope there's a sequel that's mostly about Barbara and Diana. The ending with Cheetah was clever, I like her robbing a museum and snapping necks and being all effortlessly hardcore, but mostly I loved the little girl Diana helped giving her the name "Wonder Woman".

Writers usually hate the fans. That's why Joss and JMS and Gaiman and, to an extent, even Gail, have such a cult online following. We really like being treated like human beings whose care for the characters is relevant and who are important to the continued success of an entertainment franchise, so on the rare occasions that we come across that, we cling to it.

I've come to an understanding, though, as to why Artemis was so fucking awesome. She's a modified stock character. She's the over-the-top, exuberant, ball-breaking jock, who learns that there's more to life than chopping things in half. This is something Jelenic understands. This is something just about any writer can wrap our heads around, because we've all seen it a million times, and that familiarity and comfort let him invest a little in the extras and make the character shine. He really knew what he was doing with Artemis.

Diana, clearly, he does not have his head nearly as around. His comments about what the fans want from her make that clear. Her, just getting the basics, getting her to look like Diana was as far as he could go. Artemis was a simple pot, shaped and fired in twenty minutes, and he could add the most awesome glaze job in the world. Diana was some complicated bust or something, and he's lucky to have gotten her in the kiln. Glaze was not gonna happen. (At least he can sculpt, though, unlike, say, Johns, if we're really going to torture the metaphor.)

That, and, like I said elsewhere, comics are really the best medium for Diana. She's fairly stoic and most of the really meaty emotional stuff happens under the surface, so translating her story to a medium that doesn't have thought bubbles or narrative captions makes it harder to get her across.

Yes, I think ye got it. Instead of remaining static throughout the film and only her relationship with the main character changing, Artemis actually changed and grew a little.

Johns is more of a photographer and Photoshopper then a sculpter. He takes a picture of the past, modifies it to make it fit the future and voila.

You got to see the movie already? Lucky. I don't know when I'm going to be able to go out and buy/rent it. Still, it looks cool and I can't wait to see it. I especially can't wait to see Artemis, it sounds like she's badass personified :D

Mainline it or something! It's really neat if you're a Wondy fan.

I just saw it tonight as well! =D How cool is that? XD I was equally impressed with the art and fight scenes, and I agree with you that Artemis definitely stole any scene she occupied :P Gail Simone does it again! *cheers to another sequel!*

I did not enjoy this nimated feature.
I thought the movie was.... well, if you want the full story, it's on my blog, which you can find from clicking on my name (I'm Brian) on Occasional Superheroine's comments section.
But in a nutshell, I thought it was extremely trite.

By the way, a bit confused as to whether you were referring to me when you were making the Scans Daily comment.

Re: I did not enjoy this nimated feature.
See, you went in there with expectations, and comparisons to Darwyn freakin' Cooke. I plan on seeing TNF after Wondy, and I kept reminding myself of how awful it was going to be, so anything not-awful is a definite plus.

Oh no, sorry I didn't make that clear! I was talking to Val.

I wasn't comparing, per sey. The only comparison I made was as I was writing the blog entry. I felt it was poor. I don't see Wonder Woman as that.
